With every leap in humanity’s technological pyramid comes its own set of “side-effects” for it is difficult to have the yin without the yang. These unwanted features that accompany progress is a challenge that every inventor and innovator should be able to tackle to ensure the optimum application of the technology. The advent of the digital age and computer integration in all forms of data storage and analysis has resulted in digital information being valued at a higher pedigree than gold itself. This has given rise to the phenomenon of cybersecurity and the adjoining paraphernalia with it being a factor in day to day digital interaction.

What is cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is the body of technologies, processes and practices designed to protect networks, computers, programs and data from attack, damage or unauthorized access.

TechTarget

This seems to be an apt definition for in its essence the concept of cybersecurity is pretty straightforward however its implementation is anything but simple. Computer security is of paramount importance to any technological gadget or software that is newly introduced and professionals are assigned solely to counter the threats they pose.

Cybersecurity threats

The first step in assessing a threat is cybersecurity awareness i.e. realize what are the security risks. Some of the potential risks include,

  • Loss of personal data which may result in fraud
  • Lead to the device being hacked thereby allowing the possibility of being remotely controlled by hackers
  • Identity theft resulting in potential scapegoating
  • Access to social identity and reputation resulting in blackmail

Cybersecurity tools

Cybersecurity tools are susceptible to frequent updates and modification for digital threats evolve at a pace equivalent to the technology’s progress. It is analogous to orthodox security threats such as in an airport where the security measures in place are equipped only to tackle the most recent manifestation of the threat. For a comprehensive list of existing cybersecurity tools click here.

Cybersecurity News

UK council system breach:

Even the most untrained novice usually possesses some degree of cybersecurity awareness be it as crass as password encryption. Therefore it comes as a shock, as per a survey by British based privacy group Big Brother Watch, when it was reported that more than 25% of UK councils have had their computer systems breached in the past five years. The major contributing factor was reported to be the apparent lack of cybersecurity training received by the staff. This presents a bleak outlook as established institutions are being hacked with relative ease and emphasizes the vital role that cybersecurity awareness plays at any level of organization.

The rise in vulnerabilities in Microsoft Software:

One of the main reasons that the cybersecurity is in the limelight is owing to the fact that even tech giants like Microsoft with their multitude of resources are still susceptible to digital threats. Recent reports have estimated that there has been an 89% rise in vulnerabilities since 2013. Although efforts are being taken to curb this rise it does raise questions whether the tech giant will be able to outsmart the vulnerabilities at the current rate at which they are appearing.

Government regulations and alternate coding strategies have ensured that digital information is protected to the maximum degree possible. However, the field of cybersecurity has a long way to go in order to optimize data protection and privacy.
